    Top Ten things of 2017

    December 20, 2017 /

We here at Fake Alligator put together a list of the top 10 things in 2017.  Trying to steer clear of watches and cars (for the most part) we wanted to showcase the biggest and most exciting things of the year.  So without further ado: 10: Damien Hirst’s Venice show: Treasures From the Wreck of the Unbelievable 189 pieces in bronze, marble, malachite, rock crystal, silver and gold.   The work took 10 years to produce at a cost of over $65million USD, that’s a few Paul Newman Daytonas.  Love him or hate him, this show was the only thing I remember from Venice this year. 9: That fight scene in…

Paul Newman’s Paul Newman Daytona featured on The Walking Dead

    December 12, 2017 /

AMC’s The Walking Dead featured the most valuable watch ever sold. I, like everyone else, was watching AMC’s golden-child franchise series The Walking Dead last night. It was the season 7 half-season finale.  In between tweeting about Bitcoin futures and complaining in general, which, let’s be honest, is the real purpose of the internet, I noticed something interesting. Rick is wearing a Rolex. Upon first inspection I just noticed it was a Rolex Daytona, their mainstay chronograph first produced in 1963.  I initially thought it was one of the lesser, modern models, such as 116500LN and 116520.  I know what you’re thinking, big deal.  It isn’t, I agree.  I’ve lost…

Putin’s watch in Oliver Stone’s The Putin Interviews

    November 30, 2017 /

Somehow Oliver Stone was granted access for multiple, filmed interviews with Russian President Vladimir Putin over the last two years.   You may remember Stone as the director of such films as Platoon, JFK, Wall Street, and Natural Born Killers; all fine watch movies.  The result was a 4-part series for Showtime called The Putin Interviews.  A few times the former KGB agent waved his hand and we’d get a glimpse of what the President of Russia wears on his wrist.  Finally, in part 4, we got a nice view of the IWC he was wearing.[envira-gallery id=”375″] It’s an IWC 3265 Pilot Mark XVII.  Off the shelf $4,000 watch.  It’s a…

    Yes/No: Tag Heuer UAE Autavia

    November 22, 2017 /

This edition of Yes/No features the new Tag Heuer UAE exclusive LE Autavia.  150 total pieces.  The case is larger than the original, 42 vs 39mm (NO!)  The camel strap , YES, is possibly the coolest part of this edition.  I love it.  Other favorite parts include the old Heuer logo and Beige Opaline dial.  The big miss here is the Heuer O2 movement monicker at 6 o’clock.  It’s like catching someone where Jordans in the background of a scene in Gladiator.  Just takes you out of it. This is Jack Heuer (right) and TheguywhoauctioniedoffthePaulNewmanPaulnewmanDaytonainOctober

Da Vinci painting or Paul Newman Daytonas?

    November 20, 2017 /

Da Vinci? (please say that like Tom Hanks in the trailer 2006 film  The Da Vinci Code) The last privately owned Leonardo Da Vinci (of Ninja Turtles fame) painting, Salvator Mundi was auctions off last week at Christie’s in New York. it went for….. $450,312,500 making it the most expensive painting ever sold.  Paintings by the old master are rare (less than 20) and finished paintings are ever rarer. While we all hoped the piece would end up in a museums collection, the outrageous price dictates that might not have happened.  As of the writing the buyer is still unknown. IS IT REAL? Who knows.  Seriously, this work has been beaten…

    Only Watch 2017 and beyond

    November 14, 2017 /

What’s Only Watch? Only Watch is an auction which happens yearly in which watch manufacturers create a one-off watch to donate to the auction.  The proceeds are then donated for research on Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy.  This year’s event was November 11 in Geneva and featured 50 Lots.  Here are our review of some our favorites from this year’s batch. Our 2017 Favorites The Tudor offering, a left handed Black Bay Bronze One with Khaki Green dial and bezel.  This went for 350,000 CHF. Patek Philippe brought it with their titanium 5208T with hand-guilloched carbon-fiber pattern dial.   Sold for 6,2oo,000 CHF F.P.Journe has developed an entirely new watch exclusively for Only…
